The project “Make Room for Inclusive Society” contributes to creating a favourable environment strengthening civic participation of newcomers in Riga. The project with its 5 activity blocks, is implemented over a period of 8 months from February 15th to September 30th 2021.
The project activities are designed to enable newcomers to identify challenges, match them with volunteering opportunities to be more involved with local community-work and introduce them to the work of the Riga City Council and meet relevant decision makers.
Throughout the project activities newcomers (foreign students, asylum seekers, people with refugee or alternative statuses) will be working to identify challenges they face within 4 thematic areas (Employment, Discrimination & societal awareness, practical Support, Language learning). Eventually the project shall create a connection between newcomers and other NGOs, encouraging them to join hands to solve socially relevant issues. During the project, the newcomers will be introduced to the work of the Riga City Hall, and directly interact with decision makers of the City Hall.
“As a foreign student myself, I have first hand knowledge in difficulties around inclusion and finding suitable NGOs to work with the communities here. The project will be creating an environment where newcomers, like myself, can identify pressing issues, participate in developing solutions in close cooperation with NGOs and the Riga City Hall”, says Abu Sohail ur Rehman, “Make Room” project representative.
