Today, March 17th 2022, Make Room Board appointed a new Director for the Foundation Make Room in Latvia. The current director Miks Celmins resigned from the position of the director and nominated Abu Sohail ur Rehman to become the director of the organization and was unanimously supported as the new director by the board of the organization.
Abu Sohail ur Rehman is originally from Karnataka, India, but calls Latvia his home for the past 7 years. Currently Abu is finishing his residency of medical studies in Latvia and since 2018 has been actively involved in Make Room’s various projects and initiatives. Abu has been instrumental in initiating and organizing various entertainment, educational and informative events for newcomer communities in Latvia, as well as, has been a strong support helping newcomers solve various day-to-day practical challenges.
Make Room is a not for profit organization contributing to build inclusive society in Latvia by supporting migrants with fewer opportunities, be it foreign students, asylum seekers, individuals with refugee or alternative statuses.
With the new leadership, Make Room breaks into its new journey, becoming the only organization in Latvia to be led by an actively-engaged representative from the newcomer community in Latvia.
Make Room organizes its work in 6 segments: 1) raising awareness of the issued faced by newcomers in Latvia; 2) offer practical support to newcomers in Latvia; 3) identify and report hate crimes, hate speech and discrimination incidents faced by newcomers; 4) contribute to generating employment and volunteering opportunities for newcomers; 5) support Latvian language learning for newcomers and 6) advocate for inclusive policy reforms at a municipal and national level.
