The Forum is an informal process of dialogue to identify locally relevant problems faced by newcomers in Latvia, ideate and propose effective interventions, nurture action-oriented discussions between newcomers and public authorities as well as develop a concrete "Call for Action" addressed to 14 political parties candidating for the 13th Latvian Parliament elections.
Through role-play, research, case-studies, field visits, hands-on learning methods, interactions with high-level politicians and intense team building, participants will enhance skills of advocacy for social change, critical thinking, negotiation, problem solving and cultural intelligence for leadership.
In the recent years, Latvia has become one of the popular destinations among youth from across Europe and Asia to pursue a higher education degree, launch a business or a place of employment. In the past two years, the number of foreign students enrolled in the major higher education institutions of Latvia has doubled, but most of the students who have chosen Latvia as a destination for higher education decide to leave after completing studies. Although, the number of foreign students has increased, according to The Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LTRK), 60% of the medium and large scale enterprises in Latvia lack highly-skilled and educated labour force.
Foreign students who have chosen Latvia to pursue a higher education degree should be encouraged and have the right to take part as active citizens in contributing to create Latvia as a favourable and welcoming nation to the people of foreign origin.
The project “Youth Integration Dialogue” aims to: 1) mobilise foreign students who currently reside in Latvia and have expressed interest to stay for long, possibly for life; 2) create a well-structured focus groups based on major challenges e.g. societal discrimination, employment opportunities, education, lack of active participation; 3) identify and prioritise specific issues faced by foreign young people; 4) ideate and propose interventions/solutions to the identified issues; 5) create a concrete “Call for Action” addressed to the political parties running for the 13th Latvian Parliament Elections in October 2018 and 6) hold structured dialogues to discuss youth-created “Call for Action” with decision-makers - representatives of municipalities and education institutions, politicians of major political parties, youth experts and NGO practitioners working to create effective youth integration initiatives.
The programme of the Forum has been split across 4 major phases, each phase aiming to achieve defined objectives contributing to the 3 outcomes of the Forum.
In the following months until 2020, the detailed program is elaborated upon.
